ENGLISH

Definition

A stop-loss is an order that closes a position once price reaches a chosen level, capping the planned loss. A stop that becomes a market order can fill at a worse price than the stop level when price gaps or moves fast (slippage), so it limits risk but does not guarantee the exit price.

Example (hypothetical)

In a hypothetical practice trade, a long position from 60.0 has a stop at 58.0. Over a weekend the market reopens at 57.4, so the stop fills near 57.4, not 58.0.
