Definition

RSI, introduced by J. Welles Wilder Jr. in 1978, is a momentum oscillator from 0 to 100 comparing the size of recent gains with recent losses, usually over 14 periods. Readings above 70 are conventionally called overbought and below 30 oversold, but in strong trends RSI can stay at those extremes for a long time.

Example (hypothetical)

If a hypothetical market's average gain over 14 periods is 1.5 and its average loss is 0.5, RS = 3 and RSI = 100 − 100 / (1 + 3) = 75.
