Definition
Fibonacci retracement draws horizontal levels at fixed percentages of a prior price swing — commonly 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and 78.6% — to mark where a pullback might pause. 61.8% approximates the ratio of adjacent Fibonacci numbers; 38.2% and 23.6% are derived from it, and 78.6% is the square root of 0.618 expressed as a percentage. The customary 50% level is not a Fibonacci ratio; the levels are reference points, not forecasts.
Example (hypothetical)
A hypothetical swing rises from 100 to 200. The 38.2% retracement sits at 161.8, the 50% at 150, and the 61.8% at 138.2.
