(Impulse wave)

Definition
In the Elliott wave principle, an impulse is a five-wave move in the direction of the larger trend, labelled 1-2-3-4-5. Its standard rules: wave 2 never retraces more than 100% of wave 1, wave 3 is never the shortest of waves 1, 3 and 5, and wave 4 does not overlap wave 1's price territory (diagonals excepted).
Example (hypothetical)
A hypothetical count: wave 1 rises 100→120, wave 2 falls to 110, wave 3 rises to 150, wave 4 falls to 135, wave 5 rises to 155. Wave 4's low (135) stays above wave 1's high (120), so the no-overlap rule holds.
