ทฤษฎีดาวแบ่งการเคลื่อนไหวเป็นสามระดับ คือเทรนด์หลัก (ยาวหลายเดือนถึงหลายปี) การย่อตัวรองที่สวนเทรนด์หลัก และการแกว่งย่อยรายวัน เทรนด์ขาขึ้นหลักคือยอดที่สูงขึ้นและจุดต่ำที่สูงขึ้นต่อเนื่อง และทฤษฎีดาวต้องการให้ดัชนีเฉลี่ยยืนยันกันก่อนจะยอมรับเทรนด์

Definition
Dow Theory describes three degrees of movement: the primary trend (lasting from many months to years), secondary reactions against it, and minor day-to-day swings. A primary uptrend is a series of higher highs and higher lows; Dow Theory also asks the averages to confirm each other before a trend is accepted.
Example (hypothetical)
A hypothetical index makes highs at 100, 115 and 130 with lows at 90, 104 and 118 over a year: a series of higher highs and higher lows, read as a primary uptrend if a second average confirms.
