Definition
In the Wyckoff method, accumulation is a sideways trading range after a decline in which larger operators are thought to absorb supply before a markup. Wyckoff schematics label its events — such as preliminary support (PS), selling climax (SC), automatic rally (AR), secondary test (ST), spring and sign of strength (SOS) — and group them into phases A to E.
Example (hypothetical)
On a hypothetical chart, a sharp high-volume drop to 60 (a selling climax) is followed by a rebound to 70 (automatic rally). Price then ranges between 60 and 70 for weeks; an analyst studies this range as a possible accumulation.
