Definition

Over-the-counter markets such as spot gold and FX trade around the clock on weekdays, but activity clusters in regional sessions — roughly Asia (Tokyo, Sydney, Singapore), London and New York. Liquidity and volatility tend to rise when London and New York overlap. Session hours shift with daylight saving time in each region.

Example (hypothetical)

When both the U.K. and U.S. are on summer time, London opens around 14:00 Bangkok time and New York around 19:00–20:30 Bangkok time, so the overlap falls in the Thai evening. OTC sessions have no centralized opening bell; the NYSE cash-equity core session opens at 09:30 ET (20:30 Bangkok during U.S. summer time). In the weeks when U.K. and U.S. daylight-saving schedules differ, the relative session timing shifts by one hour.
